The QS World Ranking outlined the top ten technological universities in the world as shown. The leading university in technology in 2013 was Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Stanford University was positioned number two and the University of Cambridge closed the list of top three technology universities. The rank of the other top universities in their merit was as follows: Stanford University ranked fourth, the University of Cambridge, University of California, ETH Zurich, Imperial College London, the National University of Singapore, Ecole Polytechnique, the University of Oxford and finally California Institute of technology. The top five universities will be discussed briefly in this article.
Massachusetts Institute of technology was set up in 1891to curb the industrial-technological needs in the United States. It was embraced by many industries in United States due to its focus in offering undergraduate and graduate technological degrees. It significantly contributed to the advancement of technology during the Second World War since it provided researchers with a favorable environment to work on computers, inertial guidance and radar. Currently, the university puts a lot of emphasis on technological, scientific and engineering courses. The Stanford University is a private research institution that was established in 1885. It is located in northern Silicon Valley close to Palo Alto. Various research centers have been established to enhance technological advancement. Amongst the research centers and institutes is the Stanford Research Institute, Hasso Plattner Institute of Design and Hoover institute on War, revolution and peace. It has also established modern libraries and Academic Information resources to encourage intensive research and innovation. The current library systems of Stanford University hold more than nine million volumes among them rare and special books. It enrolls students from all corners of the world and the 2013 admission indicated that the university was able to admit 11,075 graduate and 7,061 undergraduate students. It offers undergraduate, masters, doctoral and professional programs. Cambridge University has been among the early research-oriented universities in the country. It was established in 1209 and since then the university has been offering various courses that are related to research. It was ranked by the Times World Ranking as the third technology university in 2013. In the same year the university received research grants worth £332 million. In support of the research work, the university has established numerous libraries that hold more fifteen million volumes. The school of technology in Cambridge University is amongst the six schools within the campus. Its mission is to provide a focus and framework for its constituent departments to formulate and express views relevant to technology, methods and processes. The top three technology universities in the world portray a rich culture in research and collection of research materials. The admission of students in these institutions indicates that these universities only enroll qualified students who would do everything to achieve their goals and in the process the help the universities to step forward.
